The Twelve
by Justin Cronin
The second book in Justin Cronin's "Passage Trilogy" is a far more cinematic take on the universe set up in the first book. Scenes move quickly and explosively not without good reason. It's clear that after his first book had been optioned as a film, halfway through writing it, Cronin took it upon himself to format the second book almost like the novelization of the movie. I felt that really helped to prevent things from dragging.
Although the book introduces some new characters and an almost entirely different story in the first half of the book, it didn't feel like an improper deviation from the story but rather a critical set up to the world that exists 100 years in the future. Cronin's ability to create a rather expanded line up of characters and locations that all find a way to come together without handing the reader all the answers makes for an exciting read.
