This was fun, if a bit silly. The writing was immature at times, but fit the voice of a 22 year-old pretty well. I liked the world-building and the fast-paced storytelling, and Mac grew on me over time. She was still dumb in many ways, but at least she realized it. Had to roll my eyes at the heavy use of foreshadowing. It’s a useful tool that’s best used sparsely, not twice per chapter. And there were way too many happy coincidences to be believable, but whatever, at least it moved the story along. Some other parts I snorted at in disbelief: Mac rushes to Ireland in a grief-stricken, vengeance-driven panic, but packs dozens of super cute, glamorous outfits, including at least 8 pairs of completely impractical heels? The Shades attacked the mobsters, supposedly in complete darkness, but the vehicle doors were open - most cars have lights that stay on while the doors are open. There were a few idiosyncrasies concerning Irish/US-American customs that didn’t bother me overly much, but I really didn’t need 15 wordy descriptions of Mac’s pedicure du jour. I still enjoyed it, but I hope the following books in the series read a little more maturely.
