River of Teeth
by Sarah Gailey
Oh boy, how do I even start?
The premise is crazy-pants -- that the US government proposed bringing over hippos to stock swamps and become a food source -- and doubly crazy is that this proposal was not fictional.
So, starting from that premise, I knew we were in for a wild ride. And it is a rollickingcaper operation. And the story does go high speed without much pause. And if you focus on only that, it is fine.
But something I just couldn't let go, was that part of the Mississippi River had been turned into a lake south of Memphis, thanks to a dam at Memphis. That is not how dams work unless the river flows south to north (it does not).
Another thing that bothered me was this : while most of the characters were really well-defined and described (e.g., Archie was a large woman with nimble fingers and a French accent), the most description Hero ever received was something like "their blush was hidden by their dark skin." Nothing about their eyes, their style of dress, hair color (or maybe they were bald, it never said). Oh, they are immune to some poison because they have built up a resistance, and they are experts at explosive and demolitions, which is the important part for this story. But if you ask me about Hero, this is all I have :
