This was my first book by this (very popular) author and unfortunately, I wasn't all that impressed. It wasn't horrible, but it wasn't anything special either. I listened to the audiobook and the narration was kind of annoying. I will say, I really enjoyed the character of Nicky, and the fact that Jess has welcomed him into her home and raised her as her own, even after his father walked out on the family. I thought the book dragged on quite a bit and even though there were some funny parts, it wasn't all that entertaining. And the love story wasn't really convincing either.
Also, I nearly stopped the book abruptly after the incident with Norman at the 80% mark. But reader, be warned ⚠️ there is a scene where the dog gets hit by a car and suffers NEAR-FATAL injuries, but he DOES NOT DIE. I know this is something I wish I had known before this scene in the book just came out of nowhere!!
