My favorite thing about this is just how differently it plays out than I expected. This isn't something that's really that far off from the jacket description, but the change of focus and dynamic is so stark and has so much to say. Parts of this show life on a scale that feels so lonely and small, yet it is also completely full in its own way, which I found to be so enjoyable and immersive -- a bit like the feeling I got from I Who Have Never Known Men. Braverman's knowledge of survival translates perfectly here, in both the book's concrete details and the emotions that permeate it.
