The Monster of Elendhaven by Jennifer Giesbrecht

Orilium Spring Equinox 2023 Reading Challenge. Alchemy side quest - a book with night on the cover.
This took exactly one Bloodborne soundtracks worth of time to read and goddamn am I glad I bought this and read this holy shit. A truly brilliant gothic horror novella I had an absolute blast. The characters were all so fun, especially the shifting power dynamics. I loved the lore and the setting and the plot (so, everything). Gave me pretty big Vicious energy especially the "... memory of the wound remained like a collar" line and the healing abilities and fucked up main relationship. along with being incredibly atmospheric and gothic.
I am definitely keeping an eye out for anything this author writes in the future because hot damn.
2024 reread
I have been vaguely wanting to reread this for a while, and had an hour or so before going to sleep so decided fuck it. This wasn't as like, intense as I remember it being? I think watching Hannibal twice through between the last read and now made it less confronting (and also made me think that perhaps the author is a bit of a Hannibal fan with some specific descriptions and such which is fun). Absolutely still a neat little novella though and I really quite enjoyed it.
