What Moves the Dead by T. Kingfisher
3.0

This is one of those books that is delightfully chilling and easily digestible, a quick escapist read. The writing is neat and the narrative voice full of wonderful sardonic wit. In short, I devoured it quickly.

I can’t rate it too highly, though. It’s roughly the same story as Mexican Gothic (which Kingfisher acknowledges in the Afterword… damn when someone beats you to the punch), and if you look a the cover art and read the first page, you’ll know exactly what it’s about. Also, it’s a retelling of Poe’s “Fall of the House or Usher,” which makes it feel doubly derivative. That’s a shame, because it’s a decent book. It just offers no surprises or plot twists.

It’s fine. The journey was enjoyable. And I’m interested now in reading more of her books.
