Song of Susannah by Stephen King
4.0

"There are more worlds than these," he said. "That was what Jake told Roland just before he died. 'Go, then - there are other worlds than these.' And he must have been right, because he came back."

3.5 stars, rounded up. This one was weird. But it couldn't really not be weird, could it, considering King wrote himself into it.

We're clearly hurtling towards a finale in this shorter penultimate book to the Dark Tower series. Roland's ka-tet is splintered into groups for this entire book, splitting off on three different journeys. Eddie and Roland go after Calvin Tower, while Jake and Father Callahan go tearing after Susannah, racing the clock to get to her before their enemies do. We've got splitting timelines, parallel universes, and one constant in all of them - the steady crumbling of the Dark Tower.

Hands down the weirdest part of this book was the whole meta reference to being written characters in a book, but I don't think it was done quite as cringe as it could have been. I had a very 'oh no' feeling in the pit of my stomach when I saw where that bit was headed but honestly, it sort of worked. King has woven such a weird fantastical tapestry of a story with these books that he could directly accuse me the reader of destroying the Dark Tower myself and I'd probably be like "Yeah, that's fair".

All in all, I'm excited to finally get to the last book in this series and find out where it's all leading.
