Chill Tidings: Dark Tales of the Christmas Season by Tanya Kirk

3.0

This was a mixed, but enjoyable collection of Christmas ghost stories. The best of the bunch were easily:

Old Applejoy’s Ghost by Frank Stockton - Sentimental, yet full of Christmas cheer. A joy to read.

The Crown Derby Plate by Marjorie Bowen - Well written, with an effectively creepy air (but not too creepy). I’m definitely going to read more by this author.

Someone in the Lift by L.P. Hartley- I knew this would be good (The Go Between is an absolute classic), but didn’t realize how brutal it would be. The vagueness of the state of the main character at the end was annoying but very effective.

Told After Supper by Jerome K. Jerome - the highlight of this collection. Absolutely hilarious.

The rest are pretty good, with the exception of the Lovecraft story, which just provided more proof that he is a terrible writer.

Recommended Christmas reading for sure.
