I didn’t quite understand the concept of the world this story is placed in. The caste system was a little bit confusing, and although I found the idea interesting, it was still hard to follow sometimes. However, I did enjoy the overall concept. I found the different personalities and interactions between everyone unique enough that it kept the story moving and enjoyable.
I like that America was her own person. She was independent within the boundaries of her caste, but she also knew when she had to do what was right. She had no interest in the workings of a higher caste. She just wanted to live her life and be happy. So when she is sucked into this competition to be the next queen, she has no choice to but to go along with it and do her best. She has no interest in the competition, but doesn’t want to go home either. She does her best to make friends with the other ladies, and inadvertently makes a close friend in Prince Maxon, which very quickly evolves into something much more. She’s unsure how to handle her connection to the prince when she has no interest in the crown, and it leaves her confused, but no matter what, she can’t resist the intelligent and kind-hearted prince.
Maxon was a great man, but wasn’t quite sure how he was so smooth and nice with the selection contestants when he was said to be awkward and shy. I quickly got over that with how his fast connection with America developed. They made great friends, helping each other out and giving the other someone to confide in during the confusing and at times awkward competition. He hated hurting people, but he was never selfish. He did what he had to because he felt it was right, he never did this unnecessarily, and he never forced anyone to do his bidding. He gave everyone choices and opportunities, and when he discovered something he did not like, he took steps to change it for the better. He fell fast and hard for America, and he was nothing but sweet and understanding to what she was going through. He was such a compassionate and incredibly sweet man, he had me even falling for him. I loved him so much. There was so much to like, and I really enjoyed the development his relationship with America made.
This book mainly focused on the relationship between America and Prince Maxon. Although the rest of the Selection played a big role in the story as well, the relationships between each of the characters made the interactions between Maxon and America all the more intimate and heart-warming. I loved the two of them together, I found myself looking forward to them taking their next step.
This is a really good start to a series, as long as you love fluffy romance. I can’t wait to get to the next one.
