The Magic Mountain by Thomas Mann

5.0

This is a novel that, like its themes of time and death, elude straightforward explanation. You will either love it or hate it, find yourself bewitched by Mann’s prose or completely bored by his philosophizing. It is a story about a world and a way of life that has completely disappeared from this earth, and the fevered delusion many people lived under that kept them from seeing the fast approaching annihilation of their lifestyle. I’m sure I’ve made it all sound terribly sad, and it certainly has its moments, but there is a surprising amount of humor as well.
