The Headless Horseman by Mayne Reid

Great book, in the same way that “friends” was a great sitcom. But like “friends”, just not objectively enjoyable in the here and now

A good light read if you haven’t been exposed to the western genre. To some this is a cult classic but for me it hasn’t really aged well

I kept chipping away at it because I thought there was no way they could actually include every single tired trope and cliche into the plot
I was wrong

I’m a way you can’t hate it because it’s based on a true story, so all the stuff that’s been published since 1866 might have drawn on this story’s success

There’s some things that lend it credence as an unmistakably OG western, for example the description of Texas towns in their early developments and casual Irish racism
