The Switch by Beth O'Leary
3.0

This was cute! The grandmothers storyline is far more enjoyable than the granddaughters storyline but they both came together nicely. This is my second Beth O’Leary book and I don’t know why she insists on doing the alternating narrator thing but I’ll take it because she writes enjoyable rom fic which isn’t always easy to find.

I know domestic abuse is an important topic and rom fic has been known to be harmful in romanticising actually kind of abusive characteristics, but I do think it’s gone too far the other way by often trying to have a storyline dealing with domestic abuse. In the last year, all 3 romfics I’ve read have done this and it feels tokenistic and it also hugely simplifies domestic abuse issues often reducing them to a kind of “strong women leave” which is just problematic. I think the genre needs to find a middle ground aka don’t romanticise abusive traits but also don’t reduce real, complex issues for the sake of a socially conscious plot line.
