Hades by Alexandra Adornetto
3.0

Okay, I tried to give this one a chance. Alexandra Adornetto is a very nice person on Twitter and when you go to see her at book signings, I'll give her that. I think I did give this one a chance. But, I saw a lot of holes in the book that, in the end, sort of ruined it for me, like
Spoiler Bethanny gets on a motorcycle with Jake, and can't get off. Isn't she an angel with wings? She could have let go, expanded her wings and flown off and outsmarted him? Alas, she couldn't. It's like when she was cornered by some bad boys at school and Xavier suddenly had to save her in Halo. Sigh. In the end, she and Xavier were going to get married. I thought in book 1 it was cemented into the series that she couldn't have sex with a human because she was an angel--EVER. That crossed over into the break in canon/mythology of the series and destruction of an already established universe that was Breaking Dawn. Then, the drinking from the river and being able to see what was going on in her family's lives back on Earth was definitely a plot device and the trouble with writing in 1st person. But that's why writing is such an endeavor, especially when trying to sell a series.

Adnornetto definitely used her Catholic understanding of the universe to write this novel again. I'm not saying that's wrong. That's how she understands God, Heaven and Hell and it's important to write what you know. I think it was brave to write a book/book series that bordered on how she felt about God and Heaven, which is hard to do in YA without being accused of trying to preach your own personal beliefs. You could accuse Adornetto of that, but I won't. A lot of people have complained about how she's confused Hell and Hades for the same place and how that's wrong and blah blah blah, but I'm Orthodox Christian and we refer to Hell as "Hades" in our English translation of our vesper services, so I let that nit-picky argument go. Some people just want to hate on a genre (like Paranormal Romance) because they hated the most popular book in said genre, but I don't. I like the YA Paranormal Romance genre, but I'm very critical of it at the same time. Doesn't mean it's throw-away, people.

In the end, the same questions arose as when I read the 1st book. I felt like she was trying to answer/respond to all the negative reviews from Halo and show how they were wrong. I guess it's true when they say not to worry about your non-professional reviews when you write a book.

Will I read Heaven? Yes, I will just to finish the series out.
