City of Souls and Sinners by Kayla Edwards

I'm really struggling with this book. It is not only poorly written but entirely too long. Has the author refined anything in this story? Why is it almost 900 pages of pure agony? I did finish this book but wish I didn't waste my time. I will not be reading any more to this series, nor this author's work.

It seems the author has a fetish for dystopia fantasy and toxic relationships where the main characters have a dangerous codependency. It is not hot. Why is this book so highly rated? I'm honestly disturbed for the readers who enjoyed this, and it shows that some of you are hungry for chaos but have not actually lived through abuse. The fetishization of trauma and violence peppered throughout this series again, is disturbing.

"But part of being in a relationship involves loving a person through everything -- the good and the bad. I want every part of you..." super fucking toxic.

So far he says pretty words, like he wants a better life, out of Darkslaying yet his actions don't align, it is a poor imitation of love. And there is no character development at all and I am struggling to get through this book hating the main characters.

After the first book, even though it was so starkly similar to Crescent City novels, I felt it had potential. This one however has me pulling my hair out. I wish I did not finish this. It's a disappointment to say the least, a waste of time and paper.

Also, creosote and chapparral are the same thing.

If Kayla describes another POC as having "brown skin" i am going to lose it. Have you never heard of a thesaurus or have no imagination at all to only be able to describe skin that is not white as "brown"??? It drives me nuts, is so uncreative, and is harmful. How about umber, clay, ochre, sienna, cocoa, Henna, olive, ebony, bronze, the list goes on.

This is getting irksome and why are authors like Kayla getting book deals. It gives this genre a bad rap.

A note on the pages, this is super hard to read on the beginning pages of the chapter. It's super unfriendly to visually impaired folks, i can barely read it.
