This was such a delight! The mix of Northern Chinese folklore and rich historical detail woven into a story that is part murder mystery and part epic drama just draws you right in.

I loved how the author captures the fun capricious quality of foxes in the shape-shifter characters while maintaining the more serious quality of the other storyline. The way the two plot lines intersect is beautifully done, though the overall plot does get a bit over-complicated at one point (though that may have been the result of me listening to the audiobook while doing housework and missing key moments here and there).

But overall, I had a lovely time with this book, and I look forward to re-reading this one in the future.

Also, the audiobook is read by the author, and she does a beautiful job of capturing the personality of the characters and also rendering all of the Chinese and Japanese language correctly. Would highly recommend!
