I think they only thing that I didn't like was that the only stated gay person was the professer. He was depicted as a creep and a kidnapper and while that seems to add to his character the fact that he's gay doesn't. It was an unnecessary inclusion and seemed slightly homophobic even if not intentional. This isn't me saying that there can't be bad gay people in stories, the problem comes when the only gay person in your story is a bad person.
Other than that, I believe that this is very well done and I think the depiction of traumatized individuals was done well. Everyone who interacted with Mathew/Piranesi in the 'regular' world treated him as an actual person.
All in all I enjoyed this book.
