The Play by Karina Halle
4.0
Ah, Lachlan. Orphaned at age 5, going through the foster system and seeing some horrors from that, drug addiction and watching his friend die in front of him... he was set up for failure, but thankfully the MacGregor's didn't give up on him, even after he stole from them to support his drug habit. But he never quite properly dealt with all of that. He thinks he's better, but he's not really.
And Kayla, who was a maneater for a while, but has made a celibacy vow... she's not quite sure what she's looking for, but the one-night stands haven't been doing it for her anymore. And then she meets Lachlan, because Bram's charity idea needs PR, and her newspaper thinks Lachlan would be more interesting to focus on since he's a professional rugby player back home. So she spends time with him, gets to know him... when he has very little time left in San Fran, they hook up and it's explosive. After a weekend away, he's supposed to go back home, but he's not quite ready to leave Kayla, so he buys her a ticket to go back home with him.
They go back home and things appear to be good, but Lachlan's demons haven't been purged, and they become a real issue. About the same time, problems at home force Kayla to return.
Things finally work themselves out, but it takes a bit to get there. Good story.
I listened to this, and both narrators did a decent job. I will say that the girl's Scottish accent was horrible, but the Scottish guy's American accent was pretty good.
