Lots of world building going on here. The plot almost takes a backseat to it. This definitely felt like it was laying the groundwork for the rest of the books. Our FMC and MMC are secluded in a training montage for pretty much the entire first half, but during that time we are able to delve deeply into the FMC’s trauma and motivations, as well as establish their bond. The second half moved faster, and the addition of the weapon reshaped the writing in an unexpected way. I liked it.
The magic system is kind of all over the place, and the spice is minimal due to the slow burn, but I connected with the world and the characters (although I’m still having a hard time being totally sold on Max and Tisaanah’s chemistry). I’m excited to continue the series.
