robotnik 's review for:
The White Queen
by Philippa Gregory
slow-paced
I watched the show for the White Queen ages ago when it originally aired and I was totally into it because I love any sort of trashy drama that's presented in a historical wrapper. I'm willing to admit that I really enjoyed it. I'm also willing to admit I didn't like the book as much as the show.
I don't know what it is. I think everyone, in general, is several times less likeable in the book. A part of that is likely due to it being told from Elizabeth Woodville's perspective, and she seems to hate almost everyone. That doesn't excuse why she, herself, is also infinitely less likeable than she is in the show. I've read three other books in the Cousins' War and Elizabeth is definitely my least favourite voice out of them to follow.
The plot was good and enjoyable for the most part, though it kind of starting fizzling out in the later half of the novel, particularly after King Edward died, and Elizabeth and her kids went into sanctuary. There was just a whole lot of Elizabeth sitting around as things happened outside not directly involving her.
This wasn't the best Philippa Gregory and it's far from my favourite. It probably would have been better if it didn't fizzle out in the latter half. Overall, entertaining for what it was and it was interesting to see the novelized version of the show.
