꧁ Going into this I didnt really know what to expect, only that while exploring, a nine year old comes across something monstrous.  This was unsettling and did not end on a happy ever after.  It really is a story about the loss of a childhood. ꧂

The summer of 1978 was relentlessly hot, and white the adults of a tiny Italian town hide away from thebheat indoors, the childrennspend their time playing games, riding their bikes and setting each other dares. While exploring an abandoned house way outside the town, 9 year old Michele stumbles across something terrifying, which he decides to keep to himself.  As the book progresses he and we learn exactly what has happened and how the adults in the town are involved.

β‡’The horror in this book is subtle. Although once you realise what has happened itnis truly horrifying, however the innocence of Michele at the beginning makes it seems less that it really is.  His fear of monsters lurking in the dark, shown his innocence when those that he should fear are the people he lives with each day.

β‡’At times I found this a difficult read, because of the child endangerment and abuse, however despite this, it was highly readable
