It had a strong start, really boring middle, and an ending that changed my mind and made me want to read the next book. My biggest complaint is the characters. Or rather, the dialogue. Everyone talks the same. You could put anyone’s dialogue into any other characters mouth and you’d never tell the difference. There’s no interesting cadence or word choice. And it ends up resulting in bland characters.
The plot basically just sets up the rest of the story, there isn’t any real conclusion to this one. And that’s fine— Ayinde is building out a complex world for the story— but without strong characters to go with the world building, I’m just left wanting more.
