Marina is living in Rome during Italy's occupation and comes home one day to find her father has been killed by the Germans.  She flees to Florence and takes refuge with a friend of her father where she uses her knowledge of art to help him catalogue his library as he works to move it to Switzerland out of harm's way.  She gets involved with the partisans, using her skills to value items given to them to raise funds to help people secure false papers and escape.

After the war she ends up in Argentina, investigating stories of looted art.

This was an enjoyable read, for the most part, well-researched, but at times the large time jumps were jarring and broke the flow of the narrative.  Ultimately I found the conclusion frustrating, but I suppose it does leave the story and where it goes longer term with the reader.  I did like that the protagonist was involved in the war effort in a different way to the tropes
