The Dixon Rule by Elle Kennedy
4.0
emotional funny relaxing medium-paced

If I think about this book too hard I won't like it. It was exactly what I thought it would be, and I devoured it (and enjoyed it!). But if I dig into it the flaws really start to bother me.

I'll start with what I did like, though.

  • I liked that Diana and Shane were both pretty independent. They had their own lives and identities outside of their relationship.
  • I liked that Shane wasn't a total idiot and that he was proudly a relationship guy. I think reformed playboy can be a bit overdone, especially with hockey stuff.
  • I liked that
    Diana's abuser faced serious consequences.
  • I liked the overall romance of this one. It didn't feel too forced.
  • I liked the
scene with Will in the kitchen where he watched them. I think it was handled really well.

  • I liked the appearance of so many characters from the Off-Campus and Briar U worlds. That was fun!
  • Shane making up
the FWB application to send to Diana was so incredibly endearing. That's some Garret Graham stuff right there.

Onto what I didn't like...
  • Some of the writing felt SO forced, especially Shane's POV. This book could have been 100 pages shorter if he didn't talk about Diana's ass or tits every 5 lines.
  • One of my pet peeves is always telling me how funny the characters are, especially if they're not actually going to be funny. "She snorted, he howled, I cackled." Let your characters just be funny, and if they're funny then I'll laugh on my own.
  • Diana's character was difficult to relate to. Blonde, popular, thing, gorgeous, funny, outgoing, etc. I didn't really understand what her flaw was?? I'm sure part of making her this way was to show that
anyone can be a victim of DV regardless of how strong they are.
But it was hard to root for her.
  • How on earth does anyone get anything done in this apartment complex? I couldn't understand what could be heard and what couldn't. Sometimes the most normal of conversations would wreak havoc, and then
Percy showing up and attacking Diana required her to scream for Niall to get help.
I think the concept was cute, but it was executed really poorly IMO.
  • There were too.many.storylines. And many of them unnecessary -- not the least of which was
Shane's dad dying. I feel like you have to pick between dead dad and abusive ex-boyfriend in a rom-com. Both felt like overkill.

  • The whole
his 9-inch dick is so big I don't think it'll fit
storyline is sooooo overdone and it's cringey at this point. There was a whole a page about her
trying to fit his dick inside her
and I rolled my eyes the entire time.
