Confissões de Uma Máscara
by Yukio Mishima
I found this book the old way. I was strolling through a local bookshop and came across it. I had never heard of it, and didn’t recognize the author, but it immediately called me through its title… Confessions of a mask… Reading the synopsis was enough to fortify my urge to bring it home with me.
Through a semi-autobiographical novel, Yukio Mishima tells the story of a boy who soon becomes aware of his differences from others, causing him internal conflicts regarding social norms and the moral nature of his desires (his homosexuality closely connected to his obsession with beauty and death). He seems to accept his "immorality" as his "Destiny" but to the outside world he plays the part he has to play, always wearing a mask.
I really enjoyed this book. Written more than 70 years ago, and on the other side of the world, I still found it accessible, while also poetic and profound.
I was curious enough (considering the autobiographical aspect) to do some research on the author, who had quite a life (worthy of a movie, in fact). Made me really interested in exploring more of Yukio Mishima's work.
