The Book of Cold Cases
by Simone St. James
I love a good atmospheric ghost story and Simone St. James is one of my favorites when it comes to weaving a spooky setting. While The Broken Girls is still my favorite, I loved this one and found the ghostly aspects of it similar to the Sun Down Motel. I will never stay in a spooky roadside motel again and now I’m giving second thought to even seeing open cabinets in my own kitchen.
This story is told from dual points of view in first person from Shea in the later part of 2017 and third person from Beth switching back and forth from 2017 to around 1977 when the crimes she was tried for were committed. The chapters are conveniently labeled with the date and narrator and interspersed in appropriate places with news articles and trial transcripts. I felt Shea’s podcast lent a modern twist to the story and I enjoyed reading about it. Recommended to mystery/thriller buffs who enjoy a ghostly aspect to their stories.
