This book was recommended to me by a friend. She absolutely adores it but unfortunately it wasn't for me.
I found the pacing was horrendous, the characters ranged from uninteresting to downright hateable and I did not care for Verne's waffly writing style. So much of this book consists of the characters listing different marine species, which to me felt more like the content of a lecture on my marine science degree than it did a fiction book that I was reading for pleasure. I was also put of my the graphic depictions of violence towards animals. I understand that at the time the book was written, it was revolutionary and very forward thinking but as a reader experiencing the story over 250 years later, it did not grip or thrill me the same way that it did readers in the 19th century.
