The Premise
Second book in the Renegades series focuses on Rubi Russo (a “one and done” girl, flirty, confident, sexy and smart, but with a very soft core of hurt she hides from the world) and Wes Lawson (stuntmen/mechanical genius who is all about monogamous committed relationships). They meet through their friendship with Lexi and Jax, the leads from the first book. Wes wants to convince Rubi that they should turn from friends to lovers, but Rubi has a strict “no more than one night” rule. Can they do it? Of course they can, but not without some angst...

The Good
The characters are interesting and the camaraderie between the male characters works well for the series. The books function well as a standalone, though as usual it enhances the experience to read in order. In my opinion Ms. Jordan’s undeniable strength is in conveying the sexual chemistry between Rubi and Wes. The love scenes are erotic and descriptive with a strong emotional component that it’s easy to get swept up in the moment.

The Not So Good
It took me a bit to warm up to Rubi, and it felt as if the major emotional connection to her - understanding her panic - was told to me by Lexi, and not shown by Rubi. By the end I was on her side, but the one flaw that really took this book from a 4 to a 3 star was the pacing. I appreciated the condensed timeline for the romance, but there is a major obstacle that just drops in at the 90% mark and it is swept away so quickly that it was jarring. Had it happened earlier, I think I could have had to appreciate and bought the resolution. And the conclusion was abrupt with no epilogue.

The Bottom Line
Not as good as the first entry, but still an enjoyable read I’d recommend.
