“Do laws and institutions change values, or do values drive laws and institutions?”
Kim Jiyoung, Born 1982 by Cho Nam-Joo (Translated by Jamie Chang) | ★★★★☆
Kim Jiyoung is a woman who was born in the 1980s. She struggled to survive the prejudices against women in Korea. Not only do we learn about the deep-rooted discrimination, we also get to follow the resilience of a lot of women during a dark time in Korea where gender progression was not prioritized. A feminist fiction that tackles a significant social issue that women face to this day.
I was very excited to read this book because I heard a lot of good things about it from some of my favorite book vloggers. I am a huge fan of anything that advocates for women. Feminist fiction is simply one of the many topics that I am genuinely interested in, so as soon as I saw it at the bookstore, I carried it on my arm to the counter. I finished the book before January ended but was left confused with the unprinted pages that I had left with my book. Turns out I had a defective copy. (I had to go back to the bookstore I bought it from, that’s why my review took longer to post).
