"[Nate] thought they were getting close to an ending, on the precipice of a new beginning. It didn’t matter. Home didn’t always have to be a place. Home could be a person too."

The year is 1995. Nate Cartwright has just lost his dream job, and on top of that, his estranged parents have died, leaving him their rundown summer cabin in the Oregon woods—and a shabby pickup truck. With nowhere else to go, he heads to the cabin to figure out his next move. But when he arrives, he finds it already occupied by two squatters: a gruff ex-Marine named Alex and a very peculiar 10-year-old girl named Artemis Darth Vader.

Too stunned to kick them out, Nate lets them stay—at least until he decides whether to call the authorities. But as their lives become tangled together, danger comes knocking, forcing the unlikely trio to go on the run. The farther they go, the more Nate learns about Alex, Artemis, and the truth that will change everything.

I’m a huge TJ Klune fan, and once again, his writing cracked my heart wide open. His signature humor, heart-wrenching emotional depth, and unbreakable found family dynamics are all here. This one took me by surprise with its sci-fi twist, but even that felt more fantastical than technical—in a way that completely worked for the story.

If you love found family, quirky humor, deep emotional connections, and a wild, original ride with action and conspiracy theories thrown in, The Bones Beneath My Skin is worth the read.
