I am amazed by how much I truly enjoyed this book. I love what Shannon Hale is doing with her characters--particularly Raven Queen & Apple White. I was a tad bored by the riddle-ingredient-gathering after about the third one, but not enough to stop reading.
The depth of the characters is the true genius in a series that will appeal on a mass market level to the female tweenage audience. It offers them "girl friend" storylines that still embody strong values and the inner strength to believe in yourself, make your own choices and still be aware that your choices have ramifications for others and require compassion and effort in their behalf as well.
My daughter has just turned 10 and I have highly recommended this series to her and her peers.
