Judas

As someone who’s read maybe 3 graphic novels ever in my life, I wasn’t expecting to love this as much as I did. Although I was super intrigued by the premise, I was worried that the comic wouldn’t deliver. But it did. It was so stunning and ended so hopefully that as I turned to the penultimate page, I began crying completely out of nowhere. I’m not sure I’ve ever cried at a full-length book before, let alone a graphic novel. This really moved me and forced me think critically and in totally new ways about the resurrection story I could repeat by heart by the time I was 5. I gained a new sympathy for a man most Christians have written off as an irredeemable villain, unworthy of a second glance.
In roughly 100 pages, this story made me re-examine my lifelong faith—which has admittedly become more and more tenuous in recent years—but I ultimately came out the other side more heartened. And it was set to some magnificent artwork (I LOVED the swapping of the traditional heaven-hell color schemes). I’m not sure what more I could ask of a book. I think everyone, whether believer or not, could glean something from this alternative look at an ancient tale.
P.S. Highly recommend listening to the Prince of Egypt score while reading this. It’s a match made in...well, heaven!
