The Towering Sky by Katharine McGee

4.0

TLDR: Despite some dragginess, repetitiveness, and a more predictable plot which comes with having multiple perspectives, this book is a great conclusion to the Gossip Girl-esque series.

Ok, so I first picked up this series on a random whim, and I loved it. It’s incredibly dramatic and I loved the dystopian setting. Reading The Towering Sky felt like the equivalent of watching a guilty pleasure tv drama like Gossip Girl. The writing was solid for the type of story this was and Katharine McGee did a great job of getting you immersed in the huge cast and showcasing their relationships without getting me all confused, which is difficult to pull off so props to her. The final plot twist was delivered pretty well, but the best part of the book is easily the climax. I was a sucker for the drama. And once again Avery and Leda just took the book to a whole new level.

This brings me to my issues with this book. The climax doesn’t come till the last few chapters, which makes a lot of the story repetitive. Once again Leda and Avery pan out as the best characters, and their growth in this book is phenomenal. I love scheming Leda (she’s clearly my favorite character) but I love the more rational Leda in this book as well. Any chapter with Avery and Leda are deliciously entertaining, and they carry the climax on their shoulders. However, while those two shine, the others falter. What I loved about the first 2 books were that despite all of the characters leading different lives, they were interconnected and we saw those connections. However in this book we barely saw them interact, and everyone seemed to be on their own. This made some characters like Avery and Leda (and just maybe Calliope) interesting, while making the storylines of the others repetitive and boring. This repetitiveness also made a lot of the characters’ final resolutions very predictable, save for a select few.

I highly recommend this book if you’re down for a guilty pleasure like read. I’ve read books with this type of drama but what got me hooked about this series in general was how every character was pushed to their limit till their pent up drama blew up in everyone’s faces. Call me sadistic, but that’s my type of dramatic sci-fi right there.
