Raw and real, I couldn't put this book down even though it's not usually the kind I read, that is a contemporary story where not much actually happens in the present and you already know how it's going to end. But A.S. King is such a talented writer and she crafts this story with so much finesse, jumping between past and present, even intermingling other characters' POVs, that the story never felt slow. And I should clarify - though not much action happens, the emotional journey the characters go through is a roller coaster. King covers 7 years of Vera Dietz's life and she has a lot of baggage. Her best friend Charlie has even more. And watching it all be unpacked is mesmerizing.

In conclusion, I'd read this book again, and I never reread books! Who has the time? But I would, just to study the brilliant writing.
