The Sense of an Ending
by Julian Barnes
Thought provoking little story about a retired man who must re-examine a time in the past that causes him to (hopefully) have a personal epiphany about his character. I did not like the protagonist very much and almost made me quit reading the story, but I realized that a good writer will write a character like this that doesn't have any obvious horrible defects - but that he is not likeable in some way. Tony is nitpicking, too focused on himself, and trips over pennies to pick up dollars. He seems an affable sort, yet too focused on himself. In this respect, the book is thought provoking and makes you wonder about the ephemeral quality of memory and how our perceptions have tainted what we think to be reality.
