The Staircase in the Woods
by Chuck Wendig
adventurous
dark
mysterious
fast-paced
story was really interesting but I'm not a fan of wendig's writing style. would define it as start-and-stop, like being stuck in traffic. has some annoying little repetitive quirks that almost made me lose my mind; mainly the ending almost every chapter like some cw tv show's cliffhanger and starting the next by basically repeating the last paragraph, as well as "this, then, was ___" "now, ____" "not ___, no."
but honestly this novel's greatest sin: unalived
using the word "unalived" in a book even as a character's inner narration is the cringiest fucking shit i've ever come across.
but act three was good enough that i'm willing to overlook most of this.
tl;dr — annoying writing style but good story
