I loved this so much it isn’t even funny. The audiobook is incredible and not only has brilliant voice actors but a clear direction and choices made with the text that are powerful and beautiful. Yes, it has a similar format and feeling as Daisy Jones and the Six (and if you liked that you’ll like this) but also it centers beautiful bold characters and gives almost every character a moment as hero and as villain. More people need to read this, even if it is very widely read there will always be more people who need to. Love love loved it.
Graphic: Racism and Violence
Moderate: Racial slurs
Minor: Gun violence
In the audio book the n word is used in full by black characters (who I hesitate to assume are voiced by black actors) and bleeped when white characters are using it. It is not often used in hate but to quote events and titles but this attention to detail means I sited the “racial slurs” as moderate but this is of course a personal take. Not sure what it looks like in print.
Gun violence is talked about but never actually done in real time and there is not a scare of gun violence in this story for the reader the closest we get is out characters thinking there may be a gun while we the reader know it’s fireworks already
