I appreciate what Leigh Bardugo was trying to do with the darker themes, as Alina has to balance needing more power to defeat the Darkling, but the pull of darkness that comes with seeking and gaining more power. However, its a bit lost in the overall YA-ness of it all. I know at 25 I'm not the target audience, but I cringe at the overuse of the misscommunication trope used between Alina and Mal, or the girl on girl hate over a (subpar) man, or the way they both keep essentially cheating on each other.

The books are fun, but this keeps it from reaching its full potential.
