Playlist for the Dead by Michelle Falkoff

2.0

I think, like most people, I didn't find this book bad, but I also didn't find it very good. It centres around an important theme of suicide and has an interesting premise (by this, I mean the playlist), however I didn't find it very captivating or thought provoking.
I felt the playlist idea was interesting and could have been this great, intriguing thing (kind of like the cassette tapes in 13 Reasons Why), but I felt the author just let it slip by. If the songs were so important, why didn't we learn more about them or get a memory with them? I just felt like the playlist was meant to be such a big thing, but in the end, it felt like a separate story that was mentioned briefly every now and then.
Honestly, I wasn't even that captivated by the characters. I felt like quite a few of them needed more fleshing out and although some of them had interesting quirks or a side story, they still just weren't enough. Quite a few, I felt, were stock characters. I think the author could have expanded on a lot and fleshed out the novel more. I would consider it to be fairly short, so there was definitely room for things to be made more detailed or brought to life more.
Like I said, I did like the premise and the idea of it, so it gets three stars for that. However, considering the premise of it, it just wasn't impactful or too emotional. I think I was expecting more from it.
