Giovanni's Room by James Baldwin

5.0

The entirety of the last chapter… but wrenching to say the very least.

James Baldwin once said: “You think your pain and heartbreak are unprecedented in the history of the world, but then you read. It was books that taught me that the things that tormented me the most, were the very things that connected me with all the people who were alive, who had ever been alive.”

This novel made me deeply aware of many things. Lessons and views I wouldn’t have been able to comprehend to the fullest had I not seen them reflected in my own life and actions. But in that, it certainly also confirmed his quote in great depth.
