A rare nonfiction read for me. This was a little different than I expected and focused more on the early 1900s explorer Percy Fawcett. I was hoping to learn more about South American civilizations (which it got into a good bit) but very heavy on this british guy.
I thought it was very cool how the author put himself in the story and mirrored what Fawcett was going through on his own. I thought that was a unique narrative structure for a nonfiction book. I also loved reading about all the different native tribes and Fawcett's complicated relationship with them, bordering on respect and patronization. Also how even the most progressive of the British explorers at the time still thought that the most advanced natives had to be from white descent.
Finally, I thought it had a satisfying ending about "Z" (which I won't ruin) and how it briefly touched on deforestation and how different the Amazon looks now compared to Fawcett's time.
