lisens 's review for:
Fröken Julie
by August Strindberg
Ugh this is really where author intention comes into play
Because the play itself is interesting, and I thought it had some really interesting commentary on class and gender. But knowing Strindberg wanted the reader to leave feeling like Julie is irrational and stupid because she's a woman and women are naturally inferior to men (no joke, that's literally what he says in the foreword), it's kind of ruining it. Even if I didn't interpret it that way, the knowledge that that's how the author wrote the characters is still looming.
