Homesick for Another World by Ottessa Moshfegh

4.0

Ottessa Moshfegh is a brilliant writer, unafraid to go to places most would start far from. She has the ability to chill you and pull at your empathy. In showing some of the worst aspects of humanity she reveals so much about the best.

Anyone who knows me knows I love weird, dark literature and Homesick for Another World was just that. This collection of stories was brilliantly written and the characters were vividly disgusting and in so much agony. Moshfegh really hit the mark with each story. I tend to gravitate towards novels but this was a nice break. I really enjoyed the ease of reading small stories and the connecting thread of Moshfegh’ disgust with humanity made them so relevant. It was a character study and a study in a genre of literature we rarely see.

Moshfegh has proved herself as a literary voice and I need to read more of her novels and novellas. She writes for a specific audience and I think she’s found that in me.
