The Water Babies by W. Heath Robinson, Charles Kingsley

This was a trip (think “Gulliver’s Travels” meets “The Origin of the Species” meets C. S. Lewis) and very, very weird and full of obscure references from an England of 160 years ago, but it made a kind of funny, hazy sense in enough places that I enjoyed it. I love a good satirical diatribe, and this had plenty to play with.

From an earlier update:

This is hysterical in an old-timey way, and it’s pushing the limits of my read-aloud talents (how would YOU pronounce “Professor Ptthmllmnsprts”?), and I have no idea how or why my 8yo is so into it, but he *is* and we’re having fun. Although I’m no closer to solving the mystery of how/why old-timey children put up with such dense books, I’ve now at least seen proof that it happens.
