2001: A Space Odyssey by Arthur C. Clarke

3.0

Something I struggle with as a reader (and occasional reviewer) is rating books, because what should I judge and how am I qualified to do so? Do I think objectively about technical skill or elaborate on my personal opinions? I don't know, so I'll just go with a fairly neutral three-star rating for now.

This book is certainly extraordinarily well-written with its detailed descriptions of spaceflight, to the point where it could have easily been written last year as opposed to 1968. But not only do I judge books by technical skill, I also think about how much I learned (for nonfiction) and how enjoyable it was to read (for both fiction and nonfiction, although less so for the latter).

This book doesn't perform well with the final criteria. I don't have any innate interest in space and probably wouldn't have picked this up if it hadn't been recommended to me, so this rating is actually reflective of my lack of compatibility with the subject matter. Again, it's well-written, so if you think you'd enjoy it you probably would.
