White Oleander
by Janet Fitch
I took a while to finish this book. At first I wasn't really getting into it; it didn't grab me from the beginning so I read bits by bits at odd times, in between other readings. The book picked up -- for me -- after Astrid's mother was arrested, but despite having liked the book, I could not identify with any character within and they frustrated me and angered me and sometimes made me want to slap them, especially some of Astrid's behaviours and Ingrid's letters. I ended up liking this book quite a lot, enjoying the story despite my need to sometimes throw the book against a wall due to frustration, but I didn't really come to love any of the characters, despite Ingrid's redemption of sorts and Astrid's newfound strength where her mother was concerned. It's a sort of contradiction, yes, having liked the novel but not exactly the characters, but there's always a novel or two that you will read and not know exactly what to feel about it or your feelings will defy explanation...
