Miss Mayhem by Rachel Hawkins

3.0

I wasn't expecting this book to affect me like Rebel Belle. I think that's an unrealistic desire when dealing with a series, especially since some authors write a series as one entire book (cough LOTR). I read through 90% of this book in one day, so it has similar pacing to the first book. However, not a lot happens plot-wise. Instead, I think we get some more character-building from Harper. I really enjoy her as a character, since she has that authentic teenager voice. This is interesting because the book spins itself as this sort of "trial" book, similar to Throne of Glass or HP and the Goblet of Fire. The trials are not the main focus of this book; I find that we really see deeper into the characters' motives and make some realizations about their situation.

I know this review sounds vague, but I am reviewing a sequel, after all. In the grand scheme of the series, I enjoyed this book mostly for its deeper connection with the characters themselves. I thought that Hawkins could have taken some more time with this and really built this up; I stopped caring about the plot points in comparison to Harper's inner-dialogue. Overall, it unfortunately felt like the filler book in a trilogy. I think this series still has a lot of promise, so I will finish with Lady Renegade soon.
