Similar to Book of the New Sun, this third installment in the tetralogy thoroughly goes off the rails and it is my current favorite in the series.
Wolfe demonstrates his incredible ability to develop characters with motivations and identities through deft subtextual manipulation. Honestly, it's maddening how simple he makes it appear.
