Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo

5.0

This review is actually doubling as an apology letter to myself for taking so long to read this book.

Initially I was having a hard time diving in (due to so many new concepts and fantastical elements), and I thought I was going to be rating this book lower. However, I love Six of Crows and I know Leigh Bardugo's writing and if experience taught me anything its to persist. I'm so glad I did.

This book is for adults and young readers who may have enjoyed Shadow & Bone / Six of Crows should not expect the same content in this novel. I would advice against reading it if under the age of 18. This book contains graphic scenes pertaining to: rape, sexual assault, violence, gore, etc.

With all that out of the way - I love Alex Stern with my whole ass chest. She is the protagonist I've been waiting to read from. She's got really screwed up morals, she's not evil but she'd certainly no saint. She's had a lot of hardships in life stemming from her ability to see ghosts, she's followed narrow, dark paths that shat her out the other side. Alex often thinks of herself as somebody who isn't merely living, just surviving and not in the sad, pitiful way but in the, she's turned into a wild animal kind of way. and I love her for that. When we got to see the real Alex come out, not the Yale Alex, I don't think I've ever been so excited.

And Darlington, precious Darlington, I cannot wait to see you again.

This book had a lot of plot lines, lots of avenues but Leigh wrapped them all up nice and tight. Some remain - obviously or we wouldn't have a sequel in the works! This is similar to the way that she wrote six of crows & crooked kingdom in my opinion.

What I will say is that sure, you might be a little confused and not really sure of what's happening for awhile but you're gonna enjoy yourself anyways. If you're reading this because you're a Six of Crows fan than you also probably didn't understand the Ice Court Heist but you loved it anyways. Trust in Leigh, trust in the story and trust in Alex Stern - I beg.

If I had a critique of this book it's just a slow start, otherwise I have nothing else to complain about. I loved it, I loved Alex Stern, I'm on the edge of my seat waiting for the next one to come out.
