The City by Dean Koontz
3.0

Mostly entertaining to read, there were times when it was hard to figure out if the lead character was having incredibly sophisticated thoughts for a 9-year-old protagonist or if the same character was recalling the story 40-some years later, with thoughts and embellishments in the retelling. Maybe it doesn't matter. I enjoyed the music references, which rang true. I was a bit distracted by the magical-mumbo-jumbo, which undercut some of the credibility. (yes, it's fiction - yes, suspended disbelief is sometimes a necessary leap of faith). Usually, Koontz makes the blend of science and science fiction more plausible.
